There is restricted access at the Big River Health Centre’s long-term care unit after an outbreak was declared by Dr. Khami Chokani, Medical Health Officer, on December 15, 2018.

Several residents and staff members of Big River Health Centre have developed gastrointestinal symptoms. Laboratory samples have been sent for analysis. The

Isolation precautions and visitor limitations are in place. There will be no new admissions or discharges to that facility for the duration of the outbreak, unless discussed with Infection Control or the Medical Health Officer.

The public is reminded that proper hand hygiene reduces the risk of getting or spreading illnesses. Visitors to any health care facility are asked to perform hand hygiene upon entering and leaving the facility. Anyone who is ill is also asked to not visit any health care facility, whether it is on outbreak status or not.

The Big River Health Centre has a 35-bed long-term care unit. The outbreak does not affect access to the Primary Health Care Clinic or the other programs based at the facility.
