Sask North Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Services is a group of programs that assist individuals, families, and communities affected by an acquired brain injury.
We are part of the Acquired Brain Injury Partnership Project, a community-based service continuum that is managed by Saskatchewan Health and funded by Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI). We provide services to northern Saskatchewan.
Service Goals
- To make the most of a person’s abilities.
- To be a link between hospital and community.
- To work with communities to adapt their existing services to meet the needs of the person with an acquired brain injury.
- To work with families and caregivers to maintain their own health and quality of life.
- To be an ongoing contact for support, follow-up, evaluation and education.
- To educate clients, family members and the community about ABI issues and prevention strategies.

Services Offered
- Case Management – assessment, assistance with coordinating health services, referrals to other health care professionals/community agencies based on current needs, return-to-work or return-to-school planning, assistance accessing adaptive equipment, and general counseling.
- Consultation – providing information to other service providers, agencies or persons in regards to specific client needs/care and ABI in general.
- Education – client-specific and general ABI education for individuals, families, and service providers; prevention activities for schools/community groups (ex. Brain Walk, resource kits, P.A.R.T.Y. program, fall prevention).
- Independent Living Services – assistance with finding appropriate housing (may include private residences, personal care homes, etc.), facilitate recreation and leisure opportunities, assistance with therapeutic home programming and independent living skills.
Who can we help
- Must have a diagnosis of a moderate to severe brain injury (supported by medical records) and be medically stable. Persons who have a congenital brain injury or one that is the result of a progressive condition (ex. MS, Alzheimer’s disease) will not be considered.
- Be a resident of Saskatchewan or eligible for Sask Health coverage.
- Be free of active substance abuse and/or be currently involved in a treatment program.
- Applicants with a primary psychiatric diagnosis must have symptoms well managed.
- Priority will be given to applicants whose brain injury occurred within the past three (3) years.
- Community agencies, caregivers, employers, families and schools who require resources and support may also access services.
How to Access Services
ABI Services accepts self-referrals as well as those from health facilities, physicians, any rehabilitation program or professional support services, schools or community agencies.
Participation in our programs is voluntary.
